General Content: Advances in imaging, characterization, and modelling of porous materials are pivotal to the energy transition, enabling more efficient and effective deployment of technologies like carbon capture and storage (CCS) and underground hydrogen storage (UHS), energy transport, storage and utilisation. Improved imaging techniques, such as high-resolution microscopy and tomography, allow for unprecedented visualisation of pore structures and material interfaces within porous media. Enhanced characterization methods provide deeper insights into the physical and chemical properties of these materials, revealing their behaviour under various environmental conditions and stresses. Furthermore, sophisticated multi-scale and multi-phase modelling techniques, including GPU-based pore-network or direct CFD simulation, accelerated by machine learning models, are being developed to predict the performance of porous materials in real-world applications. These technological advancements collectively facilitate the system design, driving forward the development of sustainable energy storage and conversion solutions.
In partnership with the Henry Royce Institute and the National Facility for X-ray Computed Tomography, the Subsurface Energy Engineering group of the Department of Chemical Engineering is organising a 2-day conference on “Advances in imaging, characterisation, and modelling of porous materials to energy transition”. We invite contributions on a variety of relevant topics including characterisation, imaging, fluid dynamics, material sciences, and more. This event is an excellent opportunity for professionals from diverse backgrounds to share insights, foster collaborations, and explore the latest innovations driving the energy transition.
